“What scares me is that nobody seems to be thinking about how to make AI more compatible with people, rather than replacing them.”

This sentence, uttered by A. Robinson, winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics, in an interview with Bloomberg Linea, raises an essential question: is Artificial Intelligence here to replace humans or to help them?

I believe that AI will not replace people, but will help them - a lot! - in various areas. Perhaps its presence will be more limited in fields such as music and painting, where human creativity and expression are still irreplaceable.

The big reason why AI won't replace humans is simple: it doesn't know how. In essence, AI is just another tool, adding to the millions of others that have emerged throughout history. From the axe to modern computers, all technological innovations have come to make our lives easier. The difference now is the speed of change: what used to take centuries to evolve now happens in a matter of months.

That speed is frightening. But the idea that AI can completely replace humans still belongs more to fiction than reality.

On the other hand, can AI cause harm?

Absolutely. Like any tool, its impact depends on how it is used. AI is created and operated by human beings and we know that, although many think they are infallible, everyone is subject to mistakes. What's more, AI can be used for malicious purposes.

From the axe to AI, there is a common element in all the tools developed by humanity: they were created for good, but they can also be used for evil. It's up to us to decide
